| Q: Can I use my existing stainless
framework? A: Yes, we do lots
of 'reskins'. If the frame and fittings are in good condition, there is
no reason why we can't put a new cover on existing frames.
Q: Should I repair my existing covers?
A: We often do repairs but sometimes it
really isn't worth it. In some instances, the thread that is holding the
cover together can start to rot, and if the canvas is still in good
condition, we are happy to re-stitch. If there has been a tear in the
fabric, we can patch it as long as the surrounding material is in good
condition. We also often put new zippers into jobs, which again is only
viable if the surrounding fabric is intact. Quite often though, once the
cover starts to wear, it is usually a sign that it is coming to the end
of its life and new covers are inevitable. Unfortunately they don't last
forever, and given the extreme conditions they are exposed to, they do
deteriorate no matter how much uv resistance the materials have.
Q: Will the covers be waterproof?
A: Most of the fabrics we use have
waterproof coatings when manufactured. When we stitch the fabric, the
needle naturally makes small holes for the thread to pass through. When
the cover is pulled onto the boat, the tension elongates the holes
therefore creating potential for leakage. We find that after a few
weeks, the cover settles in 'taking up' the holes and then should be
waterproof again. Waterproof spray can be applied along the seams if
leaking becomes a problem. If you go to our 'Cover Care' tab, there are
maintenance tips to keep your covers in good condition, including
re-applying the waterproof coating.
Q: Do I need to bring my boat to your
marina at Newport?
A: If your boat is berthed or moored in
Pittwater, we can come to you. If your boat is berthed or moored in the
Harbour, you will need to bring your boat to us. We can arrange berthing
at our marina or at a nearby mooring while the job is being done. We
generally don't travel to the Harbour.
Q: Can you design a cover to provide
more than one function?
A: Not normally. We custom make covers to
fit a particular purpose. We find that if the design is altered to serve
a few different purposes, it just doesn't work well. We think that it is
better to do one job well rather than a few jobs badly!
Q: Do darker canvas colours fade
faster than lighter colours?
A: The canvas we use has excellent uv
resistance, and resists fading well. We have found that the darker
colours do not fade faster than the lighter ones. The canvas will fade
slightly over time, but keeping it clean and maintaining the
waterproofing certainly helps it last much longer.
Q: How do I clean my covers?
A: For information on the cleaning and
care of your covers, go to the 'Cover Care' tab on the left of the
screen. Q: Does SB Marine
Trimming do interior cushions etc?
A: We don't do interior work, but we can
recommend some very good marine upholsterers if you are interested in a
obtaining a quote. |
